Olive Oil and the Spiritual Anointing

It must have been quite the sight to see the anointing of Aaron (Lev 8:12) as the oil from inside the horn was poured out over his head and it slowly streamed down the sides of his beard. Beautiful is the description that has been brought so vividly down through the ages to our own in the book of Psalms:

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there YAHWEH commanded the blessing, even life for evermore,” Ps 133:1-3.

Anointings with oil have occurred in the past (Ex 28:41) and are still occurring today with prayer, for the reason of setting apart an individual for a special purpose. Elders are set apart for the spiritual ministry, and leadership of the assembly, with oil. While deacons receive only the laying on of hands and prayer, they are still set apart for a special service of the physical needs of brethren and work in general, Acts 6:1-6.

The laying on of hands after baptism is, interestingly enough, done without oil. The Spirit of Yahweh seals, and in a sense, anoints the individual (Luke 4:18; Acts 10:38), setting him or her apart as a special person in the family of Yahweh (1John 2:20, 27), most notably the collective bride who is preparing herself for Yahshua’s return, Rev 19:7.

Other Uses

Olive oil was typically the oil used in ancient times by the Israelites (Ps 23:5; 92:10), and is still in use today for anointing individuals per the commandments where it is called for, Mark 6:13. Stone olive presses were a common find for archeologists in the Middle East, and there are olive trees still standing in and around Jerusalem that are thought to be at least 1000-years old, if not older. They are one of the few types of trees that last so long in nature.

The olive tree is actually defined symbolically as the commonwealth of Israel, that is, the whole house of Israel and not just Judah alone. The Apostle Paul wrote under inspiration of the Spirit that, we today, being like wild olive branches, can be grafted into the olive tree and be a part of the family of Israel, Jer 11:16-17; Eph 2:12-13. These, if they overcome to the end, will be the Spiritual bride of Yahshua the Messiah at His return.

The northern 10 tribes were dispersed throughout the nations (sometimes described as

“Gentiles” ) and became the lost sheep of the house of Israel, that is, the wild olive branches, Rom 9:4; 11:1, 17.

They, along with the dispersion of Judah, are slowly being brought back into the family by being grafted back in. Yahweh will eventually bring both back into the land of Israel, Jer 33:24; Ezek 37:15-28.

The oil from the fruit of the olive trees is precious and has been used for centuries for cooking, lighting lamps, heating, and as already seen, anointing for setting apart individuals. In a very real and symbolic way it is also for the healing of the nations. The anointing with oil is called for by Yahweh when someone is sick and seeking healing, James 5:13-20; Mark 6:13. Healing is available to us because Yahshua gave His life for us:

“…He (Yahshua) was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed,”  Isa 53:5.

Symbolic and Literal

There is much that can be said of oil, but one often overlooked aspect of oil is its rich symbolic nature, even being described like a name in Song of Solomon. Not just any name, however, but a subtle allusion to Yahweh’s Name in which the maidens love, Sol 1:3.

The bridesmaids or virgins are described by Yahshua in a parable, in which oil is mentioned. The wise virgins had this special oil for their lamps, but the foolish virgins’ lamps didn’t have enough oil and the door was shut on them and they could not come in for the wedding. The wise virgins are not the bride, but they are at the wedding feast in the coming Kingdom.

As Scripture says, there’s a physical people that will be brought through the tribulation and into the Kingdom. They are also said to be calling on the Name of Yahweh when they do. Evidently, the future bride of Yahshua has been proclaiming it to them. Yahweh says they will also be His people, and He will be their Elohim, Zech 13:9;  Ezek 20:33. They too may receive a spiritual anointing in the future when a new heaven and a new earth are created:

… according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless,” 2 Pet 3:13 NASU.

YAIY Website Report for 2008

Yahweh has indeed continued to bless our website ministry. In 2008 our main website at www.yaiy.org had over 43,000 hits; that’s an average of 118 hits per day! Likewise our Kids for Yah, Sisters for Yah and New Moon Report websites saw encouraging increases in web traffic. Our “Ask the Elders” discussion forum, at www.yaiy.info, has grown from 24 members to 87 this past year.

As Yahweh enables us to expand our websites regularly with new messages, literature, newsletters, Revealing the Truth programs, music, photos, and more, we pray those called will take advantage of these on-line resources. We recently added an Outreach Ministry page where visitors can keep up-to-date on YAIY’s global outreach to believers.  We are also actively adding Foreign Translation literature to the main website (we currently have literature in ten languages). In addition to over 80 Bible study literature pages and over 160 downloadable messages our Website visitors can take advantage of our newsletter and Beacon Magazine archives where current and previous articles can be viewed and studied. Additional on-line Bible Study Aids are being designed and will be added to the website soon.

In 2009 we plan to continue adding messages, studies and more to our websites. We also plan on launching our Teens for Yah website and our Bible Correspondence Course.

Praise Yahweh for His blessings on our websites and may these resources be helpful during your spiritual walk.

The Great Depression of 1873?

When commentators invoke [The Great Depression of] 1929, I am dubious. According to most historians and economists, that depression had more to do with overlarge factory inventories, a stock-market crash, and Germany's inability to pay back war debts, which then led to continuing strain on British gold reserves. None of those factors is really an issue now. Contemporary industries have very sensitive controls for trimming production as consumption declines; our current stock-market dip followed bank problems that emerged more than a year ago; and there are no serious international problems with gold reserves, simply because banks no longer peg their lending to them.

In fact, the current economic woes look a lot like what my 96-year-old grandmother still calls "the real Great Depression." She pinched pennies in the 1930s, but she says that times were not nearly so bad as the depression her grandparents went through. That crash came in 1873 and lasted more than four years. It looks much more like our current crisis.
