Why Can’t I Celebrate Valentine’s Day?

If you are a regular Kids For Yah reader, you know by now that Yahweh’s Assembly in Yahshua does not celebrate worldly holidays with pagan roots.  Do you know the origins of Valentine’s Day?  It can appear to be a very innocent holiday.  Many people think of it as a “holiday of love and romance.”  People give each other cards, flowers, and gifts.  Even in schools today, children are expected to exchange Valentine’s Day cards.

While there are many legends surrounding the origins of Valentine’s Day, one thing is clear—we are not told by Yahweh to celebrate it!  As mentioned in past issues of Kids For Yah, there are Biblical Holy Days that we are commanded by Yahweh to keep.  Why should we keep days that are not made by Yahweh?  Satan tries to make worldly holidays look fun and exciting.  But Yahweh’s Holy Days are much more fun and exciting because they have deep spiritual meaning.

Many scholars believe that Valentine’s Day has a connection with the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia.  Many evil activities  accompanied Lupercalia.  Let us keep ourselves  pure by staying close to Yahweh and not involving ourselves with sinful practices!

  What would you do?

People who believe in Yahweh are often faced with difficult situations.  But our response to difficulties can go a long way toward solving problems.  Read the following situations and mark the best way to resolve it.

Situation #1

You come home from school after having a bad day.  All you want to do is sit in front of the television and watch cartoons, but your mom asks you to help set the table for supper.  How should you handle it?

______Complain and put up a big fuss.

______Do the task with a bad attitude so that everyone knows you’re upset.

______Obey your mom cheerfully since the Bible says we are to honor our parents.

Situation #2

You are spending the night at your best friends house.  She wants to watch a movie that you know your parents would not approve of.  What is the best way to handle this?

______Tell your friend nicely that you do not want to watch that particular movie and suggest

a different one.  If your friend insists, call your parents to come pick you up.

______Watch the movie anyway; no one will find out, right?

______Get real mad and make your friend feel stupid for even suggesting that movie.

Situation #3:

You did something wrong and your parents found out.  Now what?

______Blame someone or something else.

______Admit your mistake, apologize, take your punishment, and try not to do it again.

______Feel sorry for yourself and throw a tantrum.

When Yahshua was born, wise men brought him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  We all know what gold is, but what about the other two?

Frankincense: A costly perfume, made from balsam tree sap.  It was also used in worship at the Temple to offer a pleasing fragrance to Yahweh.  The fact that the wise men brought it to Yahshua shows that they believed He was someone very important!

Myrrh: A thick, sweet-smelling liquid that comes from an African tree.  In Bible times it was used for preparing a dead body for burial.  The body was first rubbed with it then wrapped in a cloth and placed in a grave.
