The First Passover

Inside this issue:

Pharaoh gazed over his vast Egyptian empire and thought to himself, “Who do these       The First Passover .
Israelites think they are?  Why should I let them go I don’t even know their Mighty One       Word Search!
Yahweh!”  Moses had asked Pharaoh to release the Hebrew slaves, as Yahweh had told       History Lesson:
him to do at the burning bush. Of
course, the Pharaoh refused.  He

even harder.  But just as Moses

had said, plague after plague

began to torment Egypt.  First the water turned to blood.  Then the frogs, gnats, flies, animal diseases, skin sores, hail, locusts and darkness soon followed.  But the final plague was the worst.

Yahweh had commanded His people to mark their doors with lamb blood so that His death angel would “pass over” them and not kill their first born children.  In every unmarked house, a child died, including Pharaoh’s own son.  He released the slaves.  And all of Egypt feared Yahweh.

Why do we eat unleavened bread?

Every year, during the Feast of Unleavened Bread, we remove leavened products from our homes and eat unleavened bread for seven days.  Why do we do this?

As you read on page one, Pharaoh released the Hebrew slaves after the death of the first born.  The Egyptians were anxious to be rid of the Hebrews for fear that more plagues would come upon the land.  So the Hebrews left really quickly—before their bread was ready for yeast to make it rise.  The people marched into the wilderness with flat unleavened bread, known as matzo.

The following items contain leavening and are to be removed: bread made with yeast, croutons, baking powder, foods with baking soda, most crackers, cookies, cakes, pancakes, waffles, muffins, buns, breaded items like fish and chicken, and flour tortillas.

There are lots of foods you can still eat during The Feast of Unleavened Bread.  For instance, the following items are fine to eat: fruits, vegetables, eggs, rice, pasta, clean meats, unleavened desserts, non-breaded fish or chicken, unleavened bread and crackers made without leavening.

HISTORY LESSON: Ancient Egypt

During the time that Moses lived, Egypt was a powerful empire ruled by the Pharaohs.  The Egyptians worshiped many different deities and even considered Pharaoh himself a deity.  But Yahweh showed ancient Egypt that they should not glory in their power.  He also showed them that He was more powerful than any and all of the deities they put their trust in.
